A long and elegant pencil skirt, slit at the back. The encounter between an artisanal Faso dan fani from Burkina Faso and the geometric prints of a cotton bed sheet from the 80s.
It was by composing this range of fabrics with lively patterns and joyful colors that Julie, the designer was inspired to create this unique piece. And before having the honor of reworking these beautiful fabrics in our studio, she spent years collecting and studying the fabrics and the stories they tell. This deep interest in combining textiles of all kinds is at the heart of her creative process.
The beautiful ikat fabric with green stripes that stands out on the sides at the front of the skirt as well as in the middle of the back, is an artisanal cotton weave called Faso dan Fani or "woven loincloth". It was made in the Gonghin district of Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso, by an artisan weaver named Lydie Nikiéma who makes these marvels from her family's backyard. The golden lurex threads subtly encrusted in the weaving bring shine and chic to the entire skirt.
The almost kaleidoscopic geometric patterns placed on the sides in the back come from a cotton upholstery fabric from the 80s. An explosive and fabulous era that the designer particularly likes in terms of style!
On the front, the enigmatic looks of feline creatures seeming to come from another planet never leave our eyes.
The cut of the model is rather adjusted and close to the body, which has the effect of lengthening the silhouette and highlighting the curves of the body. For a harmonious fit and optimal comfort, we lined the fabrics entirely with a finer and lighter cotton canvas . Its pretty slit cutout at the back allows you to walk and move freely. It is easy to wear with a crop top or a wrap-around top from our collection, flat sandals or even high heels.
Made with great care and finesse, this unique piece, entirely handmade, required twelve hours of work, from the research of the fabrics through the composition of the patchwork to the manufacturing stages.
