“Wood of Roses” wrap-around mini-kimono

A "mini kimono" wrap-around top where an artisanal Bazin Tie & Dye from Mali meets the hypnotic eyes of little printed cats.

It was by composing this range of fabrics in soft colors that we were inspired to create this unique piece . And before having the honor of reworking these beautiful fabrics in our studio, Julie, the designer spent years collecting and studying the fabrics and the stories they tell. This deep interest in combining textiles of all kinds is at the heart of her creative process.

The Bazin Tie & Dye fabric placed at the neckline and on the waistband was made by myself in Bamako, Mali, where Julie was invited to follow a dyeing training, in the Modibo Samake workshop in 2019.

The main material is a pink viscose jersey . It gives the wrap-over a fairly supple drape , while the wide cotton borders that finish the waistband, collar and cuffs give the garment a nice fit and a more structured look . The edges of the cuffs are perfectly finished and can be rolled up , revealing the patterns of little cats printed on the inside.

This crossover can be worn in three different ways:

1. crossed tightly above the chest and tied above the waist
2. crossed leaving the neckline more indented and tied a little lower
3. the sections of the belt tied at the front like a vest to wear over a long dress for example.

Made with great care and finesse, this unique piece, entirely handmade, required six hours of cutting and sewing.
